New degree marking system planned

Jul 02, 2015

New degree marking system plannedThe government has announced plans to add a new 13-point scale to the degree class system.

Currently, there are five different classes of degree, ranging from first-class honours to an 'ordinary' pass without honours. The universities minister says that this isn't enough to distinguish between different levels of success, especially as 70% of graduates now get either a first or a 2:1.

The new system, which is expected to be in place at all universities by 2020, will work on a 13-point scale. It could be particularly useful for people whose results are just below a class boundary, since they'll be able to show how well they really did.
