Not got a TV Licence? You could get fined. Read on to find out the facts about TV Licensing – and make sure you don’t get caught out…
- A colour TV Licence costs £147. You can choose whether to pay for the whole year at once or in installments.
- If you watch TV in your room in halls, your room needs to be covered by its own TV Licence.
- If you live in a shared house with a joint tenancy agreement, then you’ll probably only need one TV Licence for all residents. Just make sure it’s been paid for!
- If you have a separate tenancy agreement for your own room then you’ll need your own individual TV Licence.
- If your accommodation is self-contained (if you have exclusive access to washing facilities, or your own entrance) you’ll need your own individual TV Licence.
- You may be eligible for a TV Licence refund if you move out of your term-time address over the summer. This is only the case if the Licence is valid for at least three full months when you leave.
- Your TV Licence won’t automatically move with you if you change address, so it’s important to let TV Licensing know your new address to ensure you’re covered.
- If you have a TV Licence you can only use BBC iPlayer away from home if the device you’re using it on isn’t plugged into the electricity mains.
- You don’t need a TV Licence if you don’t watch or record live TV and only use on-demand platforms other than BBC iPlayer.
- You risk prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000 if you’re caught without a TV Licence.
